A driver who caused the death of a cyclist whilst distracted by her mobile phone was sentenced today at Craigavon Crown Court to two years imprisonment, of which one year will be served in custody and the remainder on licence. She was also disqualified from driving for four years.

Nicole McGeown (31) pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving following a tragic collision on March 26 2020. The collision caused the death of Ronald Walker who was cycling along the Lisburn Road in Moira.

PPS Assistant Director Eilis McGrath said: “This was a very sad case where Ms McGeown’s use of her mobile phone while driving was a significant contributing factor to the collision which killed Ronald Walker.

“Prosecutors from the PPS Belfast and Eastern Region worked closely with the Police Service of Northern Ireland, who had carried out a thorough investigation, to build a strong case against the defendant which resulted in a guilty plea.

“Using a mobile phone whilst driving not only diverts attention from the road but significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents. This incident highlights the dangerous consequences of such distractions, reinforcing the need for greater awareness and responsibility on the road.

“Mr Walker was a much-loved husband and father and his loss in these painful circumstances have left a terrible void in the lives of his family and friends.

“The conclusion of this case serves as a reminder that driving while using a mobile phone is a reckless action that can result in devastating consequences.”
